2016 Traveling in the USA

Texas - After driving through the endless roads of rural Texas, hot and harsh, and so many abandoned towns we arrived at San Antonio, explored the Missions and the city before strolling along the River Walk with our friends the ducks. Had a great time!

Texas - A stop at the Chip & Joanna Gaines’ “Silos” or Magnolia Market from TV series “Fixer Upper” in Waco Texas. Although the market looks clean and beautiful at first impression, in my opinion everything has been done the cheap way. And do not expect homemade or local art work here (items on sale mostly from CHINA). Ironically, they are far from inexpensive! And the bakery? Nothing to write home about. If you are looking for a good breakfast or some bakery/pastry items, head to Houston’s COMMON BOND Cafe & Bakery, this is well worth the trip. Exceptional quality, cannot be compared with the “Silo Bakery”. So yes, we did go to Houston!

Texas - Texas - Houston. The Common Bond Cafe & Bakery, YES…

Louisiana - Lake Charles to Baton Rouge and then driving all around New Orleans for hours. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Just make sure to lock your car at certain places. Inequality here is extreme, drugs and crime are rampant.

Mississippi - Traveling the small coast to Biloxi

Alabama - The George Wallace Tunnel, interesting, and then the very long “Jubilee Parkway” Bridge on Mobil Bay to go to Montgomery.

Florida - Slowly coming back to Florida via the West coast, stopping in Pensacola, Panama City, the Apalachicola National Forest, Cross City, Crystal River, Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg to visit again the New Dali Museum.

Florida - St. Petersburg, The New Dali Museum.

Florida - North Miami, best friend, “Agatha Praline Huchet Vasquez de St. Andre”.

Florida - North Miami, I must say this, may be not the most “Flashy” car around, however a GREAT car.

Florida - Miami Beach, on 79 Street, the Super Moon, November 14, 2016.

Traveling in a Car, small SUV or RV? Part II

Considering that the Honda Element is only a 4 cylinder car, not a 4x4, the car performed exceptionally well in all types of weather and temperatures, climbing like a champion up the Trail Ridge Road from Estes Park to the Grand Lake in Colorado (U.S. Route 34), the highest road in the U.S.!

Sleeping while on the road

We camped, slept in the car and in several hotels ($75-$150 per night). Sleeping in our Honda Element proved to be WAY BETTER than a hotel! Not to mention the savings. The only good thing of hotels was being able to take a relaxing shower after a long day on the road (of course, always with flip flops to avoid toe fungus!). Because no matter what hotel, many of them really need more than cosmetic fixes.

From Patricia Vasquez + MHD59 . The 2016 USA Tour

They have poor insulation, bad AC, noise, insufficient security, and in some cases, prostitution, drug dealing, and creepy people around. So believe it or not we spent much better nights in the car than anywhere else. Cold nights were an easy fix, warm blankets and ‘human heat’. And hot nights…that is something else. However, nothing that a couple of battery-operated fans wouldn’t fix this. So we figured very fast how to solve these issues in order to get a good nights sleep.
